About the Art Project

In 2001 the Work of Our Hands began the Art Project with a fully equipped wood turning shop which now has six lathes., a band saw, drill press and a wide variety of turning tools.  The program has expanded under the direction of Ann Fowler.  The programs include:

Senior Strollers     Every Monday senior citizens participate in arts and crafts activities including, quilting, painting and knitting projects.

Text Box:    Pottery

Emmaus House has a pottery building equipped with a kiln, two electric wheels and a hand building area.  Children make pinch, coil, slab, and thrown pottery and learn glazing techniques.

Text Box: Weaving and Knitting

Emmaus House recently acquired two table looms and a floor loom.  Knitting projects include caps and scarves.

Text Box: Woodworking and Wood Turning
Children create birdhouses, bird feeders, and other items in the woodworking classes. Bowls, pens and candlesticks are some of the projects made in the wood turning classes for children and youth which meet on Saturdays, during the Christmas holiday, and during the Summer Camp. An adult
group meets on Monday evening.

Text Box: Computer Graphics
The latest addition to our art programs is a computer graphics lab, thanks to a grant from the United Thank Offering of the Episcopal Churchwomen. When in place this lab will have five computers, scanners, printers, a video projector and digital cameras. This program will not only stimulate creativity but will also provide training in valuable skills.

Volunteers

Volunteers are a vital core of all of these programs.  They include people from the community, members of Emmaus Chapel, seminary students and people from the wider community.

Grants

The Work of Our Hands is able to provide substantial funding for the Emmaus House Community Art Project through the generosity of individual donors, churches, the sale of folk art and crafts and grants from the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta, Target Stores, Publix Food Stores, the Episcopal Charities Foundation, the Rhodes Fund of Emmanuel Church, Athens and others.
